Leticia Arellano was
born to Deaf parents in Cd. Juarez, Mexico. While she had a good childhood,
there were no Deaf schools or Deaf programs at any of the schools in Juarez.
Leticia’s passion was to receive a formal education. Her parents sacrificed
their lives in Mexico and moved to Santa Fe, NM for better education.
Leticia’s dream came true when she was enrolled in the New Mexico School for
the Deaf.
Leticia
grew up in the “diversity” community at New Mexico School for the Deaf.
There were Native Americans, Mexican, Spanish and Caucasian.
After a six-year
employment at the United States Postal Service, Leticia decided to go back to
school because she had been dreaming of teaching Deaf Hispano students.
Gallaudet University fulfilled her with many golden opportunities. Leticia has
taught Deaf children at New Mexico School for the Deaf, Metro Deaf School, Texas
School for the Deaf and Kendall Demonstration Elementary School. She is
currently employed at the Center for the ASL Literacy at Gallaudet University as
a diagnostic assessment specialist.
Leticia
has been involved with many organizations. The highlight was to be selected for
the leadership training from National Council Hispano Deaf and Hard of Hearing.
She has traveled to various countries around the world.
